Special child in special education: Evi Rongen from Meerlo writes her own book!
Evi Rongen (12) from Meerlo has written her own book ‘Evi’s World’. She did this last year during a school project at the special education school on the Talent Campus in Venlo. Evi, who has Down syndrome, does not let herself be limited in developing her (writing) talents.
Evi plays the main role in her book herself. The story revolves around her big dream of going to New York, something her mother forbids her to do. Together with her little brother Rens, she devises a plan to be able to go to the city of the ‘Big Apple’ anyway. In the book, Evi goes on an adventure in New York together with her older cousins Sara and Jody. Rens (8), Evi’s little brother, likes having a role in the book. “In the book, I have to come up with a plan together with Evi. I always do that too when I want to grab some candy,” he smiles. Evi found inspiration for this subject through her mother’s experiences and through films she likes to watch. “Mom used to live in New York for a while and I really like films like ‘100% Coco New York’. Writing my own book is a dream come true,” she explains.
