Gloss laminate or matte laminate, which do you choose and why?

Why should I have my book laminated? That is something many people wonder about… What is the purpose of this laminate, which type of laminate looks best for my kind of book, and can’t I simply skip the laminate? Let’s talk about it!
“Laminate is your best friend and protects your book against all the dirt and damage that are lurking.”

Laminate? How, what, where?

It is actually very simple: laminate is literally a thin layer that protects your book’s cover, gives it a more luxurious look, and makes it stronger. Using a laminating machine, the laminate is applied to the cover paper using heat and glue. Thanks to this protective layer, you can spill on your book without completely ruining it. That’s pretty handy, isn’t it? But there’s more!

  • Laminate prevents cracks
  • Laminate makes your book more durable
  • Laminate gives a more luxurious look
  • Laminate protects against moisture and weather (for example, UV radiation from the sun).

Make your book “shine”?

At Bookadew, you have a choice of two types of laminate: gloss laminate and matte laminate. So, it is not the case that every type of laminate immediately means your book looks like a disco ball. On the contrary! That is, of course, possible if you choose the gloss variant. Gloss laminate literally makes your book shine. It is a glossy layer with a reflective effect that turns your book into a real eye-catcher. Gloss laminate is also very scratch-resistant, so it still looks neat even after heavy use. Additionally, gloss laminate makes the colors of your cover more intense.

Luxurious matte appearance

Matte laminate gives your book a matte appearance, as the name naturally suggests. So, if you’re not into glitter and glamour, this is the perfect option for you. Matte laminate provides a somewhat chic look and adds a more business-like touch to the book. Matte laminate is slightly more fragile than gloss laminate, but it still protects your book well. Are you writing a nail-biting, suspenseful book where your readers will dig their nails into the cover? Then choose the shiny version, as it can handle that best.

A matter of taste!

Is one better than the other, then? No, it simply depends on your taste and the type of book you are writing. So feel free to choose whatever you like best, but do consider the type of book you are creating and how this finish enhances the book’s appearance. If you have questions about this and order your book from Bookadew, we will of course help you with this choice as well.

PS: the price is the same for both variants, so you don’t have to let that make your choice!
