Paper selection for book printing

The right paper choice for your book: what are the options?

When having a book printed, you might first think about the content, the cover, or the size. But the type of paper is at least as important. It determines not only the look and feel of your book, but also how pleasant it is to read, how photos look, and how sturdy the whole thing feels. In this blog, we give you an overview of the most important options so that you can make the right choice.

Why is the choice of paper so important?

Paper is more than just the material on which the text appears. It plays a major role in the experience of your book. Thicker, matte paper gives a luxurious and calm appearance, while coated paper makes photos stand out. The right choice therefore depends entirely on the type of book you are creating.

What types of paper are there?

At Bookadew, we work with various paper types, each with its own characteristics. The most popular options:

  • Matte white paper: This paper has a calm, non-glossy appearance and is pleasant to read. Ideal for textbooks, novels, cookbooks, or short story collections.
  • Coated paper: Brings photos and illustrations to life beautifully. Perfect for photo books, anniversary books, or books with many visual elements.
  • Cream-colored paper: Softer on the eyes and has a warm, classic look. Is often used for literary works or personal stories.

Thickness and weight of the paper

Not only the finish, but also the weight of the paper affects your book. Thicker paper (e.g. 140 or 170 grams) feels sturdier, but also makes your book heavier. Thinner paper (e.g. 100 or 135 grams) is lighter and ideal for longer works with many pages.

Choose paper that suits your book

Every project requires a different approach. Some examples:

  • A family book with many photos? Then a smooth paper like Silk MC is a logical choice.
  • A novel or a collection of short stories? Matte or cream-colored paper is more pleasant to read for longer texts.
  • An informative book or manual? In that case, matte paper is often suitable for a professional look.

The choice of paper might not be a top priority when you start your book, but it has a major impact on the final result. So take the time to determine what suits your content, goal, and look. And if you have any doubts? At Bookadew, we are happy to think it through with you.
