Thousands of options, but what are the do’s and don’ts when choosing a suitable font for your book? This choice is more important than you might sometimes think. It must be clear but also fit well with the atmosphere of the book. For example, you don’t want to evoke horror feelings in a romantic story. We tell you everything you need to pay attention to in this blog.

Fonts with or without serifs?

One of the most important differences in fonts is between serif and sans-serif fonts. Various studies show that we can read and interpret serif fonts (“a small stroke”) better. The human brain recognizes letters more easily and quickly without having to read the entire letter.

Title/cover

When choosing a font for your title that appears on the cover, among other places, it is important to completely disregard the above. The atmosphere and appearance of the font are far more important here than readability. Of course, this does not mean you should choose an unreadable font, but it is slightly less important. If you are writing a book about history, choose a classic and elegant font. So, truly go for an experience!

Headings

Most books use headings. Serif fonts are usually used for this. These may also have a bit more presence, but do not need to be as distinctive as the title on the cover.

Content

The content of your book is the most important thing. After all, this is the information it’s all about! It usually consists of long passages of text that need to be easy to read. That is why a serif font is preferred. Just take a few books off the shelf, and you will see that they usually feature a clearly readable serif font!

This applies especially to reading books, of course. If you are creating a photo book with short texts, readability is slightly less important, and you can also opt for a serif font.

Most common fonts

There are a number of typefaces that are frequently used by book writers/designers. Examples include:

Font size

Not only the font but also the size is important. A font that is too small is difficult to read, but one that is too large is also uncomfortable to read. Font sizes 10, 11, or 12 are usually chosen. Which size you choose depends on personal preference, the target audience, and the font. As you can already see with the fonts above, some are naturally somewhat larger than others.

TIP: print at actual size!

Before having your book produced, it is helpful to check if the font will turn out the way you want. Therefore, print a portion of your book at actual size. When printing the desired pages, you can indicate in your settings that you want to print them at 100% actual size without scaling.

Do you find choosing the right font difficult and could you use some help?
